Ive also been tweeting on my iphone for about a year. In fact, I would have probably Given up on twitter if I had not had my iphone or other similar device to tweet from. Being able to tweet while mobile allows you to use twitter to meet people spread a wide variety of information and well, kill some time. I always encourage newcomers to twitter to just start on their mobile device and then maybe use an app on their computer.

The Beginning
So, I was first introduced to twitter by @current during the 2008 election current tv used #current #debate and other hashtags and posted these tweets and the bottom third of the screen while the debate was live. At the time my username on twitter was heirofgreatness a name I picked just for the purpose of tweeting during this event. Having little understanding of what twitter really was I began tweeting that night hoping to see my tweet come up on screen. Indeed I had a couple tweets appear (don't remember exactly which ones) and that was it I was hooked. I knew their was something to this twitter thing. Mind you I was still tweeting from my computer but, this kind of communication seemed unbelievable to me still. I would continue to post during debates from then on and gained a few followers each time. Most of these followers were of course political many opposed to my beliefs, but that was ok I was having conversation.

Free Apps
Sometime in September I purchased my iphone. The iphone was the reason I went to visit the apple store and ultimately bought my Macbook pro in 2006. But when they relased thier 3g, gps capable version in 08 i knew it was time for me to finally purchase one. One of the first apps i downloaded was twitteriffic and it was fine. I could post pics via twitpic, my location, i could @reply people. But, what was really missing was following people and other powerful features. But twitterific was free so no complaints. It was ad supported which was actually good because the ads were god bookmarks for when You refreshed your feed. I downloaded other free apps such as twinkle which was great but clunky, prone to quitting and it coolest feature; local tweets was not as useful as it could be. Twinkle did however get me into more local conversation which is what i wanted.

I finally caved
I really started tweeting "hardcore" in January '09 following more people from my computer and engaging in convo more often. I knew i needed a more powerful app. The most important feature at the time for me was to be able to follow people right from the iphone. I used the one resource i knew would work best: Twitter! searching for terms like iphone twitter app i heard about a few, One that really caught my attention was tweetie it was $2.99 but it sounded great. I would be able to follow, search terms, And follow trends right on the iphone. So I began to follow like crazy. I used the features to my best ability. I also loved the nearby feature. It worked great (for a time, more on that later) I would search for people near me as i traveled and this netted me some great followers all over Michigan. Eventually for some reason the nearby feature would only load one tweet at a time and I couldn't open the users profile to follow. Which renders the feature useless. I could not find this issue in tweeties help files nor did i get a response from tweetie. I still loved this app for managing my accounts. Yes, accounts, as i was now managing @Michigantweets an account designed to help michigan business with exposure on twitter as well as connecting michigan users and informing them of michigan events and news. Overall I love tweetie and still use it but ive began using something else to tweet thes days as well...

Currently
Recently, tweetdeck released a version of their app for the iphone. I downloaded it immediatly. After all, it was free and was all I heard about from people using computers to tweet. At first, I didn't see the use for it. No local tweets feature, it just seemed to be a better way to mange multiple accounts simultaneously. Then i gave it another look peering into all the features. I could setup search columns for what ever term I wanted. I set some up Search: Michigan, Grand Rapids,Lansing,Detroit,Saginaw,Flint, St. Ignace. Places i wanted to hear about. I now have several more. One drawback though was that I started reading the search terms more than the people i was following. Ok for @michigantweets not ok for @damianhansen So, Im using tweetie to read up on tweets from those i follow and using tweetdeck to find news and comment on events going on in michigan. What I must say is I love tweeting from my iphone. Its the only way that suites me. I will continue to tweet almost exclusively this way. So please Follow me!

chivalry, gratuity, manners

www.damianhansen.com

after a long time contimplating it I've finally made my mark on the net. Damianhansen.com is up and running. Installation was easy. The leather was very soft, and the case provided plenty of padding. Pockets in the front seem useful, but there was no barrier protecting the top of the laptop from your materials. I would have like to see a strap or clasp to keep the case shut in transport. Th case slid right into my bag and is quicker then slipping it into a sleeve then into my bag. I really like how professional the cover looks. I also like when the flap is down i can set my external harddrive on it and it keeps everything neat.

over all i enjoy this case quite a bit. I give it a 8 out of ten. I would just like to see the improvements I mentioned.

possible new iphone design

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 270px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qwRqSRKWHT0/SYjJG3tVOUI/AAAAAAAAABQ/xULUEYSTqqM/s400/NewiPhoneSpecs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298706081471871298" />

Toshiba's TG01 Challenges iPhone 3G

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qwRqSRKWHT0/SYjH7RimcoI/AAAAAAAAABI/V3Mf3U0sloE/s400/tgsmartphone_full.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298704782736126594" />

Toshiba has announced a touch-screen smartphone that could be a viable alternative to Apple's iPhone 3G and the BlackBerry Storm.
The TG01 is a Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone that has a large 4.1-inch WVGA display, one of the biggest screens on a mobile phone. At 0.38 inches thick, the TG01 is also far thinner and sleeker than its rivals. Toshiba has layered a homegrown 3-D interface on top of Windows Mobile to make navigation easier, and the handset can respond to gestures and shaking to do things like answer and end calls.

More Personal Tech InsightsWhite PapersInformation Leakage: What it is, and how Digital Rights Management (DRM) can Prevent itKleer Advantages Over BluetoothVideos

The Friday ITch -- Season 2, Episode 3
While the design may be attractive, the most appealing feature may be what's under the hood. The smartphone is one of the first to use Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM)'s Snapdragon chipset, which the companies have said will bring near-laptop speed while reducing power consumption. At the core is the 1-GHz Scorpion microprocessor, paired with a 128-bit multiple-data capability and Qualcomm's 600-MHz digital signal processor for multimedia applications.
Because it has Windows Mobile, the smartphone will have a familiar suite of applications to view and edit documents, play music and games, and surf the Web. The handset should come with Internet Explorer Mobile 6, which will have full Flash support. Users will be able to surf the Web, trade instant messages, and download e-mails with a 3G connection or via integrated Wi-Fi.

The TG01 will come with GPS and assisted GPS for location-based searches, turn-by-turn navigation, and other services. It also will have one-click access to YouTube, Facebook, and other Web-based services, and users can expand the phone's memory up to 32 GB through the microSD slot.

Toshiba hasn't revealed any details on pricing, but it said the TG01 should be available this summer. The company said it would release more details at this month's Mobile World Congress.
original story here

Background processing coming with iPhone 3.0?

Apple might be planning to allow background processing in a future iPhone, perhaps having decided that its planned push-notification system for the iPhone was not the best solution.
MacRumors has a report out today saying they've "heard" that Apple is thinking about dropping its objection to having iPhone applications run in the background at some point in the future. If you'll recall, Apple announced last June that iPhone users wouldn't be able to run more than one application at the same time in order to preserve battery life and performance, which surprised developers used to creating smartphone applications for other platforms with that capability intact.
Instead, Apple's Scott Forstall announced plans for "a far better solution;" a push-notification service that would route notifications from one application to another over Apple-hosted application servers. This was supposed to allow developers to create an instant-messaging application, for example, that could interrupt your game of Bejeweled with an IM window.
Whatever one thought of the merits of that approach, the service was supposed to be ready by last September. It's now February, and Apple seems to have completely forgotten it ever said such a thing. As usual, it's not clear what is responsible for the holdup, but perhaps such a service has become irrelevant with plans to allow true background processing.original story here

The Eye of the (BlackBerry) Storm

iSuppli took apart Research In Motion's BlackBerry Storm to determine the cost of its components. Guess what? The iPhone parts are cheaper.

As the battle for the smartphone market heats up, comparisons abound between Research In Motion's BlackBerry Storm, released in November, and Apple's iPhone.

For starters, both devices boast a touchscreen, forgoing the buttons found on more conventional phones. But the more important comparison, from the bottom-line perspective, lies in which device carries a fatter margin. And on a cost-per-unit basis, the advantage for the moment appears to belong to Apple (AAPL). A new analysis of the BlackBerry Storm by market research firm iSuppli indicates the cost of components and manufacturing for RIM (RIMM) is slightly less than $203. By comparison, those costs for Apple's iPhone 3G, the second iteration of the device, are less than $175. iSuppli's estimates factor in only the cost of components and assembly and don't include estimates for the cost of software, licensing of patents, or distribution. But they do help fill in the blanks on how profitable a device may be.original article here

Starbucks to close more stores as profit drops

Starbucks now plans to close a total of 977 stores, including previously announced sites in Australia. Verizon on Tuesday reported a 15% increase in quarterly earnings.

Yet mirroring Verizon, AT&T also showed painfully sharp erosion in traditional phone-calling business. Voice revenue fell 10.3% from the year-ago quarter and primary local-phone lines in service dropped a sharp 11.4%. The precision strike leveled a compound, which was owned by local tribal elder Khalil Malik, killing at least 10 suspected militants, including five foreign nationals, according to the Pakistani security official. The site of the attack is about 30 miles east of the Afghan border.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said Malik was killed along with his brother and nephew. Authorities in North Waziristan, however, said they have been so far unable to identify any of those killed because militants immediately cordoned off the area. "I suspect a high-value target may be among the dead," the Pakistani security official said.

Jan Mohammad, a local tribesman, said Malik and his relatives probably died in the strike, which sparked panic among Malik's neighbors. Mohammad said that Malik was an influential tribal elder but that he was not known to have links with the Pakistani Taliban or other insurgent groups in the area.

There were conflicting accounts about the number of casualties in the first attack. Local residents said there were at least 11 bodies, but Pakistani television channels said 10 were killed.
original story here

Obama to Keep 'BlackBerry'

It may be unpleasant to think you'd have to give up your smartphone because of your new job. But if your new job happens to be President of the United States, chances are you could work out some sort of amicable arrangement. Barack Obama will get to keep his BlackBerry, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters Thursday. Exactly what sort of tasks he'll be able to use it for is another matter.
original story here

Windows 7 vs. Mac OS X Snow Leopard: Apple ups the ante

Apple initially seemed to suggest that Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard would be a minor release following 2007's 10.5 Leopard, citing support for Exchange Server push messaging as the only customer-facing feature. However, Apple historically directs attention upon its currently shipping products rather than its future plans. As the Snow Leopard release grows closer (remarks at WWDC last summer indicated it would ship "in about a year," or Summer 2009), more details have been released.

New kernel features in Snow Leopard

Snow Leopard will deliver a full 64-bit kernel, requiring the same significant "all at once" upgrade in device drivers that Vista's significant kernel changes did. Apple will likely have an easier time pulling this off, as Snow Leopard is only designed to run on a relatively small number of higher end PCs, all made by Apple. Rather than trying to get lots of vendors on board as Microsoft must, Apple will be supplying the majority of kernel-level drivers for Snow Leopard.

While Microsoft has sold a 64-bit version of Windows for Intel x86 PCs since mid-2005, actual 64-bit adoption has been slow. Apple has incrementally supported 64-bit background servers and applications in Mac OS X since the release of the PowerMac G5 in 2003; all 64-bit capable Macs can already run 64-bit Mac OS X software because Apple doesn't offer two versions of its operating system; the same version of today's Leopard runs both 32-bit and 64-bit code.

In Snow Leopard, this will improve as the entire operating system, including all bundled apps, will be compiled for both 32-bit and 64-bits. This results in a roughly 15% increase in performance across the board for 64-bit Macs, such as those with Core 2 Duo processors (most models released since 2006, as the chart below depicts). It also has implication related to security hardening. Windows users also benefit from running the 64-bit version of Microsoft's operating system, but compatibility problems have made the move less attractive, leaving mainstream Windows users stuck on a 32-bit platform. Windows 7 perpetuates this problem by delaying the move to 64-bits to a future release.

In addition to bringing 64-bit processors into the mainstream of Mac computing by making 64-bit the default rather than an option, Snow Leopard also debuts the fruits of Apple's efforts in making full use of multiple cores and multiple processors. Snow Leopard's new Grand Central Dispatch is used to aggressively and efficiently schedule processes across all available processor cores in parallel, and OpenCL is being made available to allow developers to take advantage of the raw processing power that often lays idle in the system's GPU.
Link to original story here

YouTube to allow Big Media to bring own ads, take on Hulu

Continuing a recent string of monetization efforts, YouTube is expected to allow major partners to display their own ads on its site. At first glance this move is an attempt to mend YouTube's fractured copyright relationship with big studios, but it may also be intended to entice more mainstream content—and the actual revenue it generates—to what has traditionally been a user-generated content community.

YouTube already allows a small handful of major partners, such as CBS, to sell its own ads on videos in its official channel and on any other videos caught by YouTube's copyright detection technology, according to TechCrunch. YouTube splits the revenue with these partners no matter who sells the ads, though the company does not detail how these splits favor each party. As early as March, YouTube is expected to expand this "bring your own ads" program to more big studios. However, a YouTube spokesperson refrained from naming names, telling Ars only that "We work with partners on a case-by-case basis to see whether this option makes sense for them and make those decisions accordingly."

link to original storyhere

Michigan's December jobless rate hits 10.6 percent

Louis Aguilar / The Detroit News
Michigan has entered the era of double-digit unemployment. Students involved in athletic programs are being taken out of class to urinate in a cup in the nation's leading high school steroids testing program.

The findings have unearthed not much to substantiate concerns that steroid use is a gigantic problem. After the initial 10,000 tests only found four positive results, critics announced that the two-year program was a waste of effort and money.

At the moment, Texas lawmakers are pondering whether or not to maintain the $6 million program, reduce it or stop the program entirely. The idea of testing was to combat steroid use, not find teens using them, said Rep. Dan Flynn, a Republican.

"We don't have a bunch of pelts hanging on the wall," Flynn said. "The success is that we haven't had a lot of positive tests."

In 2005, headlines of professional athletes using steroids raised concerns that high school students were using them too. Two years later, Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst made steroid testing the major platform of his run.

At the end of June, officials anticipate that 40,000-50,000 public school students from all kinds sports are going to be tested.

Critics laughed when the first results were announced. A University Interscholastic League report released Dec. 1, announced that the first 10,117 tests revealed only four cases of steroid use.

An additional 22 cases were labeled "positive" because students did not follow testing rules. These students would either not give a urine sample, were absent the day they were chosen, or departed the testing area without permission.

Republican state Sen. Dan Patrick is loudly against the testing program, saying it is a "colossal waste of taxpayer money" that could be focused on combating recreational drug and alcohol use.

Dewhurst insists that the program needs to finish its course in order to decide if changes are needed.

The testing is "deterring our young people from putting their lives at risk or wrecking their bodies through the use of illegal steroids," Dewhurst stated.

Texas is the only state with a steroid testing program of this size, but restricted testing other places also hasn't unearthed extensive steroid use in high schools.

Illinois started the 08-09 school year by testing competitors at regional competitions, sectionals and state championships. The findings are not yet available.

Flynn encourages that the Texas program should keep on going, but will reduce the size of it, as long as it stays effective. The law mandates that a "statistically significant" number of athletes are tested.

High schools are concerned that the state will force the cost of the program on their shoulders. Maintaining the $6 million program will force schools to pay $4,709 every two years.

Even if the program continues, Rutledge noted that the early results show that steroid use is not the problem they thought it was.

"If one kid is taking steroids, it's a problem," Rutledge said. "It's not the epidemic that people feared it was."

Macworld

By Mathew Honan
The big theme at this year’s Macworld Expo is not a product, it’s a year: 2010. Next year’s conference is touted on banners, information booklets, and even the show badges, which come with an ad for next year’s event — the first without Apple, it’s anchor tenant.
But if you want to see what the show will be like in 2010, sans Apple, come down to the Moscone Center right now. Actually, don’t bother. It’s a snoozer, because without Steve Jobs, or any big new product launches, Apple might as well have not showed up today.
“Worst. Macworld. Ever.” said one attendee after the Tuesday keynote. “This sucks.”
This year’s keynote was an epic yawner. No new iPhone. No new iPod. No new iMac, and — despite lots of pre-show hype, rumor and buzz — no new Mac Mini. The big news? It’s a battery. Apple certainly has new hardware offerings in development, but it isn’t announcing them here.
Yet in other slow news years, Apple has shared the stage with some of those developers, even granting Microsoft some time in the spotlight. This year third-party developers were given exactly zero seconds. It was almost like the company was trying to go out on a whimper.
Indeed, Apple senior VP of product marketing Phil Schiller, who took over keynote duties from Jobs this year, got in a little swipe at the event itself just after the opening bell. Noting that Apple Stores now serve more than 3.4 million customers a week, he went on to declare “that's 100 Macworlds each and every week going on in our Apple Stores.”
Ouch.
The keynote also ended with a thinly-velied insult: Tony Bennett singing “I left my heart in San Francisco” — surely a goodbye middle finger to International Data Group, which owns Macworld Expo.
"We've done plenty of Macworlds without Apple in other countries," insisted Pat McGovern, CEO of IDG, after Tuesday’s keynote. "The Mac community has a lot of people exploring all sorts of different interests. Members of that community and developers will always have a place at Macworld."
However, the 2010 theme is so pervasive that it almost seems as if IDG s overcompensating. And perhaps it is, afraid of what attendance will be like next year without the Apple anchor that’s normally the big draw.
Analyst Tim Bajarin, president of market research firm creative strategies said Apple spends about $25 million on Macworld, money better spent on it's chain of retail stores, which attract far more customers than Macworld ever could. "It is rational for Apple to pull out of MacWorld," Bajarin said. "Apple is right to spend its money on getting more people into its stores."
Bajarin said he took Apple's announcement about Jobs' health on face value. It sounded right, he said and if Jobs health were in serious jeopardy, Apple's board has a serious financial duty to disclose it, he said. He said he expects to see Steve in the new year, possibly with a new product line. "For the last decade, if Apple has a new product, Steve is the one to announce it.
Yet perhaps it was just as well Jobs stayed away. As one Twitterer put it: "The Macworld Keynote left me unimpressed. Maybe that's why Steve Jobs didn't present today."
Instead they got Schiller, who launched into his presentation by declaring that the news today was going to be all about Macs, and that he was going to announce three new things. Only one of these turned out to be about an actual Mac computer: a new 17-inch MacBook Pro.
The other two major announcements were software suites — iLife and iWork — Schiller proceeded to spend the bulk of his presentation describing them in detail.
The iLife demo showcased some nifty new features in iPhoto—facial recognition and tagging, automated export to Flickr and Facebook, and a geotagging function. He also unveiled iMovie’s new editing features, which look incredibly slick, and finished with GarageBand, which now includes celebrity tutorials (from musicians like Sting!) on how to play the piano and guitar.
Next was iWork, where there was no big news. The product announcements centered around new versions of Pages (documents), Numbers (spreadsheets) and Keynote (presentations). Apple also announced iWork.com, essentially a cloud computing version of the desktop software that allows for collaborative editing. Think Google Documents, but Apple-fied.
The last of Schiller’s three talking points was a new 17-inch MacBook Pro with an integrated non-removable battery that the company claims will run for 8 hours and recharges 1000 times.
Finally, after stepping over Steve Jobs’ traditional “one more thing” line (we’d wager most in the audience barely heard Schiller mumble it) he circled back around with a crafty “one last thing,” which turned out to be iTunes news.
But instead of the final news being the biggest, as per tradition, this was yet another yawner. DRM is disappearing from iTunes, bringing Apple on par with Amazon. Also of note: songs will have a three tiered pricing scheme with tracks going from $1.29/$.99/$.69 a pop.
Given that Apple has long resisted variable pricing, the backtracking didn’t come across as fantastically awesome as Schiller tried to deliver it. Topping it off was Tony Bennett who came onstage and belted out a couple of songs nobody under 60 knows.
In short, this was the future of Macworld Expo: one without any exciting news from Apple.
Mathew Honan (mathew_honan@wired.com) is a contributing editor at Wired magazine and frequent contributor to Wired.com. No vids or pics in this lite version. Overall I give this app a. 7 out of ten.
